Pakistani businessmen Khalid Mahmood Raja and Khalid Chaudhry were sworn-in by Pakistani Ambassador Khan Hasham bin Saddique as president and chairman of the Riyadh-based Pakistan Investors Forum (PIF) respectively, at a ceremony here recently. The new PIF team also renewed their pledge to work tirelessly to strengthen trade and investment ties between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.
Several other office bearers of the new PIF including Ghulam Safdar, vice president; Babar Shah, general secretary; Tanvir Mian, joint secretary; and Zahid Latif Sandhu, finance secretary also took oath of office.
Ambassador Saddique said: “There is need to increase Pakistani exports to Saudi Arabia, which amounts to a meagre $400 million annually.” This is insignificant keeping in view the two-day trade, which exceeds $2.5 billion annually, he added. In fact, Pakistan mainly imports oil and oil products from the Kingdom, which account for 90 percent of total imports from Saudi Arabia.
“The political and security relations between Riyadh and Islamabad are at a high strategic level, but our commercial relations are far below our expectations,” he added.
“The Pakistani economy is growing consistently and Pakistan’s GDP growth rate will be above 5.5 percent for 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 ... Pakistan continues with economic reforms and pursues policies that make the country compete better in global markets,” the ambassador said.
PIF President Raja said that the PIF works closely with the Saudi Arabian General Investment Authority (SAGIA) and the Pakistan Embassy. He called on the Pakistani government “to design and offer easy investment schemes for overseas Pakistanis.” Raja thanked the Riyadh-based “Knowledge Core” led by businessman Amir Shahzad.
Chairman Chaudhry said: “I am happy to be entrusted with this leadership position of the PIF that provides me with another avenue of continuing the work I have been promoting virtually all my life.” He said that “about 60 percent of the top 100 companies of the Kingdom have been headed and built by Pakistanis.”
Several appreciation trophies were also presented to leading investors, former PIF office bearers and promoters including Shahzad and Shamshad Siddiqui.
The Riyadh-based PIF is an association of Pakistani businessmen and investors. It has a total of about 400 registered members.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. has introduced the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+, smartphones that “reimagine the way people communicate, share and experience the world.”
The Galaxy S9 and S9+ drive innovation with Samsung’s advanced camera. The smartphones are redesigned with a new dual aperture lens that powers an innovative low light camera, super slow-mo video capabilities and personalized AR Emoji.
The Galaxy S9 and S9+ deliver an enhanced entertainment experience with powerful stereo speakers tuned by AKG, immersive audio with Dolby Atmos and a refined edge-to-edge Infinity Display — a key staple in Samsung’s design heritage. In addition, the Galaxy S9 and S9+ come with the new SmartThings app, which unites Samsung’s existing IoT services into one single, smart experience.
“The way we use our smartphones has changed as communication and self-expression has evolved,” said DJ Koh, president and head of IT and mobile communications division, Samsung Electronics. “With the Galaxy S9 and S9+, we have reimagined the smartphone camera. Not only do the Galaxy S9 and S9+ enable consumers to shoot great photos and videos anywhere, it’s a smartphone that’s designed to help them connect to others and express themselves in a way that’s unique and personal to them.”
Consumers today want a smartphone camera with state-of-the-art technology, so they can express themselves with high-quality images and tools to tell their own, unique story. The Galaxy S9 and S9+ cameras are built with these consumers in mind, with a super speed dual pixel sensor with dedicated processing power and memory to take shots with high photo quality.
Samsung lets users create an emoji that looks, sounds and acts like them. AR Emoji uses a data-based machine learning algorithm, which analyzes a 2D image of the user and maps out more than 100 facial features to create a 3D model that reflects and imitates expressions, like winks and nods, for true personalization. AR Emoji shares users’ real-life emotions not only in video but also with a range of stickers and uses a standard AGIF file format so users can share their emojis across most third-party messaging platforms.
Samsung’s intelligence platform, integrated into the camera, uses augmented reality and deep learning technologies to provide helpful information about a user’s surroundings.

The Saudi Dental Society and Colgate have kicked off a month-long campaign to improve oral hygiene across the Kingdom, as part of their joint commitment to raising nationwide standards.
‘Oral Health Month’, the joint community focused initiative, launches on the back of a recent survey commissioned by Colgate, which revealed that more than 75 percent of residents across the Kingdom admitted to visiting a dentist only when they are in pain and need treatment.
Speaking at a press conference to announce the annual Oral Health Month campaign, Dr. Fahad Al-Shehri, president of the Saudi Dental Society, urged the dental care industry to support their drive to raise awareness of preventive oral care habits across the Kingdom.
“With more than three-quarters of the population yet to adopt proactive dental care practices, it is evident that there is still a major need for change in the way residents approach oral care. Through community led initiatives, such as Oral Health Month, we hope to increase awareness among residents of all ages, especially the younger generation, allowing them to start implementing healthier oral care habits early on in life,” said Al-Shehri.
The effects of poor oral care was further highlighted through the recent survey when almost 50 percent of respondents confirmed they felt that having bad teeth impacted their overall health — which ultimately impacts one’s overall self-confidence.
“We want to encourage everyone, especially the youth across the Kingdom, to smile more and feel confident enough to smile without worrying about the condition of their teeth,” said Marios Trikides, marketing director, Colgate.
Residents can visit the campaign’s website www.colgateamanah.com to book a free dental appointment at their closest community clinic.
Colgate will be running road shows across Riyadh, Dammam and Jeddah with dental check-up booths set up across several malls that allow mall-goers and families the chance to have a free dental check-up.

The needs of electric car owners must be included in future plans for residential buildings, along with clear strategies for retrofitting existing homes with overnight recharging points, Hyundai’s top manager in Africa and the Middle East has said.
Mike Song, the carmaker’s head of operations for the region, said Hyundai has ambitious plans for low- or zero-emissions cars in the region, and that internationally it has a wider range of drivetrains than any other company, including fully electric, plug-in, hybrid, and hydrogen fuel cell.
While each technology has its advantages, Song said that fully electric vehicles, using batteries for energy storage, offer the fastest route toward zero emissions — as long as people can keep their cars charged. With current home design, that may not be possible.
“There is now very real consumer excitement around electric driving,” Song said. “In our existing urban design, however, the only people who can realistically make that switch are those who live in a house or villa with an attached garage, because they are the only ones who can plug into a power supply to recharge overnight. If you park on the street, or even in basement parking for an apartment building, keeping your battery charged will be much more difficult.”
While cities worldwide are experimenting with kerbside recharging points for cars parked on the street, Song said it will be down to property developers and managers, as well as homeowners’ associations, to make sure that residential carparks can provide a charging socket for each car that needs one, along with a system for billing the cost.
This will most likely need planning authorities, including governments and municipalities, to incorporate recharging points into their planning regulations — both as a standard requirement on new buildings, and with clear guidelines on upgrading existing properties.
“We must ensure that, if you have allocated parking for an apartment, you can expect to recharge an electric car as part of that parking,” said Song. “Given time, consumer demand will ensure this happens, but the authorities can help drive the transition by including this expectation in building codes.”

Ford is increasing production of two popular full-size SUVs to meet surging demand for both models ahead of their arrival in the Middle East. The Lincoln Navigator, the company’s new luxury SUV flagship, and the Ford Expedition have both undergone a complete redesign.
The company is using advanced manufacturing technologies and an upskilled workforce to increase line speed at its Kentucky Truck Plant to build even more Lincoln Navigator and Ford Expedition SUVs, boosting production targets approximately 25 percent since last fall when the SUVs hit the market.
A new $25 million investment for additional manufacturing enhancements brings Ford’s total investment at the Kentucky Truck Plant to $925 million and allows the company to increase manufacturing line speed.
This investment and advanced manufacturing upgrades are examples of the company’s quest to improve its operational fitness. Upgrades include 400 new robots, a new 3D printer that enables workers to make parts and tools more quickly and cheaper, as well as enhanced data analytics to keep the assembly line moving as efficiently as possible.
Crystal Worthem, Ford Middle East and Africa’s marketing director, said: “We knew that the Middle East would fall in love with the Expedition and Navigator — but we’ve been floored by the interest both all-new SUVs have had ahead of their arrival. Both have been tailored to deliver the best on- and off-road performance, power and capability for customers in a region where uncompromising dependability is essential.”
“Launching Lincoln’s flagship SUV in such a receptive market is incredibly exciting and we really can’t wait for the first customers to get their hands on theirs. For Ford, the all-new Expedition heads our robust SUV lineup, making it the freshest lineup of SUVs available in a highly competitive scene for 2018,” Worthem added.
